Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in Sarajevo & Transfer to Bjelašnica

Upon arrival at Sarajevo International Airport, you are met by your guide and transferred into the highlands of Bjelašnica Mountain. The drive climbs steadily from the city into open alpine terrain, where forests thin out and wide horizons begin to dominate.

After settling into your mountain lodge, you’ll enjoy a short orientation walk to stretch your legs and take in your first views of the Dinaric Alps. Dinner is served at the lodge, featuring simple, hearty mountain cuisine.

Overnight: Mountain lodge on Bjelašnica mountain

Day 2 — Bjelašnica Highlands & Hranisava Peak

Hiking duration: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Mountain lodge

Wind is never just weather on Bjelašnica—it’s part of the experience. Depending on the day, you may feel a gentle, warm breeze or a sharp south wind as you begin hiking toward a remote shepherd’s hut set above 5,000 feet (1,620 m). Lunch is enjoyed here, with sweeping views across rolling hills and bare limestone peaks.

After a short rest, your guide leads you on a steep but rewarding climb to Hranisava Peak (6,400 ft / 1,964 m). From the summit, the landscape opens in all directions, revealing Treskavica, Prenj, Čvrsnica, and Vranica in the distance.

Descending from the peak, you visit the traditional summer settlement of Krosnje, where shepherd families still maintain stone shelters and seasonal grazing traditions. Stories of harsh winters and wildlife underline how wild this region remains. A gentle return walk along a mountain stream brings you back to your lodge for dinner.

Day 3 — Lake Lokvanjsko & Mount Vlahinja

Hiking duration: 6–7 hours
Overnight: Mountain lodge

After breakfast, you hike across the northern slopes of Bjelašnica toward Lake Lokvanjsko, a small alpine lake surrounded by high-altitude juniper (kleka). The air here is crisp and scented with herbs, and the stillness is broken only by frogs and birds.

From the lake, the trail climbs steadily for about 1.5 hours to the summit of Mount Vlahinja (2,056 m / 6,745 ft). A picnic lunch at the top offers rare views combining untouched wilderness with distant ski infrastructure.

The afternoon hike continues through peaceful, rarely visited terrain toward the abandoned mountain hut of Sitnik, a quiet reminder of Bosnia’s strong mountaineering tradition. You return via an alternative route, circling the lake and enjoying new perspectives of Hranisava and Krvavac peaks.

Day 4 – Igman Mountain & Olympic Landscapes

Hiking duration: 4–5 hours
Overnight: Guesthouse near Konjic

Leaving Bjelašnica behind, you travel to Igman Mountain, known for its forests, meadows, and former Olympic trails. The hiking here is gentler, passing through pine woods and open clearings where locals once trained for the Winter Olympics.

You’ll visit small mountain villages and enjoy a relaxed lunch before continuing south toward Konjic. In the afternoon, you arrive at your guesthouse near the Neretva River, where the evening is free to explore the old town or rest by the water.

Day 5 - Boračko Lake & Blidinje Nature Park

Hiking duration: 3–4 hours (optional walks)
Overnight: Mountain hotel / guesthouse in Blidinje

The morning begins with a visit to Boračko Lake, one of Bosnia’s most beautiful glacial lakes. Surrounded by steep slopes and dense forest, the lake invites swimming in summer or quiet lakeside walks.

In the afternoon, you continue to Blidinje Nature Park, a vast highland plateau framed by the Čvrsnica and Vran mountains. Easy walks lead you past medieval stećci tombstones, open pastures, and Blidinje Lake itself. The sense of space and solitude here is striking.

Dinner is served at your mountain accommodation, with local specialties and stories shared over the table.
